Bilingualism: A Global Public Health Strategy for Healthy Cognitive Aging
نویسندگان
چکیده
Dementia is a global public health priority which cost societies $818 billion in 2015 and disproportionately impacting low middle-income countries (LMICs). With limited availability of disease modifying drugs to treat Alzheimer's (AD), researchers have increasingly focused on preventative strategies may promote healthy cognitive aging mitigate the risk impairment aging. Lifelong bilingualism has been presented as both highly debated promising reserve factor associated with better outcomes A recent metanalysis suggested that bilingual individuals present average 4.05 years later clinical features AD than monolinguals. Bilinguals are also diagnosed ~2.0 monolingual counterparts. In this perspective piece we critically evaluate findings consider specific implications these LMICs. Furthermore, appraise major epidemiological studies conducted globally onset dementia. We how impactful robust cognition older age be Given expenditure resources available LMICs minimal successes trials propose should positioned an important strategy for maintaining Finally, reflect upon scope implementing within education systems promotion initiative government policy.

Does Bilingualism Influence Cognitive Aging?
Recent evidence suggests a positive impact of bilingualism on cognition, including later onset of dementia. However, monolinguals and bilinguals might have different baseline cognitive ability. We present the first study examining the effect of bilingualism on later-life cognition controlling for childhood intelligence. We studied 853 participants, first tested in 1947 (age = 11 years), and ret...

Recent behavioral data have shown that lifelong bilingualism can maintain youthful cognitive control abilities in aging. Here, we provide the first direct evidence of a neural basis for the bilingual cognitive control boost in aging. Two experiments were conducted, using a perceptual task-switching paradigm, including a total of 110 participants. In Experiment 1, older adult bilinguals showed b...

Previous work has shown that bilingualism is associated with more effective controlled processing in children; the assumption is that the constant management of 2 competing languages enhances executive functions (E. Bialystok, 2001). The present research attempted to determine whether this bilingual advantage persists for adults and whether bilingualism attenuates the negative effects of aging ...

متن کاملNeuroimaging of Healthy Cognitive Aging
Cognitive aging research and theory has, until recently, been based upon behavioral measures of cognitive performance such as response time and accuracy. Results from behavioral methodologies have indicated a general age-related decline in cognitive functions such as speed of processing, attention, perception, working memory, and cued and free recall—and age invariance when assessing cognitive ...
